Chinese and Korean stargazers observed an object thought to be a nova or a comet around 5 BC.

With the uncertainty surrounding the precise date of Jesus birth this is a likely explaination....

Remember with the current dating Herod the Great would have died some 4 years previous (4 BC).

No matter what it was, it WAS the sign given by God to hearld the birth of his son Jesus.
