Under provincial law, there was nothing preventing a 14-year-old Ajax youth from buying the car he later crashed, killing two friends, officials say.

What does it matter if he owned the car before he was old enough to drive. Lots of kids buy cars before they turn 16 so they can work on it and have it ready to go when they're legal. Finding a deal and buying before hand is a good idea. I suppose he could buy it and leave it in the previous owner's name, but that wouldn't be legal either. The kid knew he was breaking the law and it wouldn't have mattered if he was driving his parents car..........he wasn't legal to drive.

but they can't drive the car they buy at least not legally , so not sure of the point in allowing them to buy cars at such a young age .

maybe there should be a minimun age to be allowed to buy a car like 14-15 , so they can work on it or play with it for a bit but not too early in life .

The age of purchase doesn't matter at all. You should be able to own and title anything like that at any age. I'm surprised about the insurance part of things though. Maybe someone under the age of 16 shouldn't be able to get any insurance other than fire and theft so they protect their investment. Owner ship doesn't matter here since he could have done the exact same thing with his parents car.

In some places, it's done as an insurance "scam".
The longer the car has been owned/insured without accidents, the cheaper the insurance becomes, so some parents start on the waiting list before the child has their licence.

It's also a huge nightmare for the courts when little johnny the drug dealer gets pulled over and convicted of DWI, but they can't confescate the car because it's owned by his mommy and she needs a Viper to get to bridge nights.

Maybe they could charge him with street racing too. They're not catching anyone racing anyway.

The government can't tie the drivers licences to cars either because there are tons of people out there that buy cars but never operate them eg parents for kids or lovig family members with good credit vs bad credit.

Why didn't the parents know he know about the car? Never mind, I think I know the answer pobably the same parents who drop their teenagers off at the main street to "go to the Library to study".

    I hate being synical.

Old enough to work....old enough to buy things.

Old enough to break the law......old enough to go to jail.
