Just over a year after a single-use cup fee was implemented in Vancouver, the city’s council passed a motion to get rid of it.

Not surprised by this at all. People have bitched to no end over this fee.

The by-law, which required businesses to charge 25 cents for throw-away cups, was implemented in an effort to reduce waste.

However, some councillors—like ABC Party’s Rebecca Bligh, who brought forward the motion to scrap the fee—say it was flawed from the start.

“We had heard overwhelmingly from residents in Vancouver and businesses saying this cup fee is worsening affordability and not changing consumer behaviour,” said Bligh.

Of course not. The people who go multiple times a day to get take out coffee still would. But seriously, what's a freaking quarter when you're spending $10-20 a day for coffee? It's laziness at it's best to not have your own coffee mug or make your own coffee at home, fill a travel mug (or thermos if you're really serious), and take it with you. I've been doing just that for many years now. Though I guess that wouldn't be practical for those who insist on fancy coffee drinks.

The amount of waste this generates is mind boggling though.

Oh come on! Doesn't make you feel all green inside when you get that plastic cup and lid with a paper straw these days?
And take your pop & beer cans to the recycle depot and watch them get stuffed in giant non recyclable bags and jammed into 40 ft trailer to haul all the way to the plant in Vancouver 100lbs at a time.
\Oly a lefty communist environazi would even think of shredding them first so the truck could carry 20 tons at a time like it's rated for.
