It's being reported that there was a single live round in the gun. What the actual fuck. Someone needs to go to jail.

I was always taught to NEVER point a gun at something you don't intend to eat, and NEVER assume a gun is unloaded.

That said, it must be incredibly difficult to know you are responsible for such an accident. The gun master and Alec Baldwin must both be devastated by this event. :(

Indeed. I imagine hes a wreck right now. I would be. But then again, I doubt he realized a prop gun could be deadly like that. Its been 28 years since Brandon Lee was killed on set in a similar incident, and sadly, its taken another death to once again drive home the point of gun safety.

I was under the impression that prop guns could not fire live rounds. :?

Rust crew describes on-set gun safety issues and misfires days before fatal shooting

Hours before actor Alec Baldwin fatally shot a cinematographer on the New Mexico set of Rust with a prop gun, a half-dozen camera crew workers walked off the set to protest working conditions.

The camera operators and their assistants were frustrated by the conditions surrounding the low-budget film, including complaints of long hours and pay, according to three people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to comment.

The camera crew showed up for work as expected at 6:30 a.m. Thursday and began gathering up their gear and personal belongings to leave, one knowledgeable crew member told the Los Angeles Times.

Labor trouble had been brewing for days on the dusty set at the Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe.

Shooting began on Oct. 6 and members of the production said they had been promised the production would pay for their hotel rooms in Santa Fe.

But after filming began, the crews were told they instead would be required to make the 50-mile drive from Albuquerque each day, rather than stay overnight in nearby Santa Fe.

The cinematographer who was accidentally killed, Halyna Hutchins, had been advocating for safer conditions for her team, said one crew member who was on the set.

As the camera crew members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees spent about an hour assembling their gear at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, several nonunion crew members showed up to replace them, the knowledgeable person said.

A member of the producer staff then ordered the union members to leave the set. She said if they didnt leave, the producers would call security to remove them.

Corners were being cut and they brought in nonunion people so they could continue shooting, the knowledgeable person said.

There were two misfires on the prop gun on Saturday and one the previous week, the person said, adding there was a serious lack of safety meetings on this set.

A representative for the production company did not immediately comment.

The entire cast and crew has been absolutely devastated by todays tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Halynas family and loved ones, the spokesperson for Rust Movie Productions said in a statement Thursday.

The shooting occurred about six hours after the union camera crew left.

Baldwin, the films star who also served as a producer on the film, was apparently rehearsing a scene outside the church of the Bonzana Creek Ranch set, according to two knowledgeable people.

This is a myth. There are no 'prop' guns on a movie set. They are real guns, with blank ammunition.

What should be looked at is why a gun on a movie set had live ammo at all. Seems the safest way to do these stunts is to ensure real bullets are never on the set.

It seems like theres a lot of confusion over whether it was a live bullet or a dummy charge and from what Ive been reading, live ammo can mean dummy charges and blanks. Basically, anything thats in the chamber of the gun. And either way, Baldwin was handed a gun to use that he was told was safe to fire and it wasnt. And theres going to have to be a thorough investigation of how that happened.

But from the initial reporting so far, it seems as though there was a lax safety regime on set and a good chunk of the crew left the day before over safety concerns. Which is likely why the AD handed the gun to Baldwin and not a prop master.

With all the techy innovation that has been developed why not use 3D printed weapons? Create the bang bang boom features afterwards.

Some actors take time to learn the shooting sports. Before handling any live firearm they must show skill in gun safety.

Like, never get into a gunfight with an actor. Even the liberal ones have been in multitudes of shoot-em-up movies and TV shows over the last 40 years. 8O

Even though a 'blank' doesn't have a bullet, it is still pretty powerful explosion in a tight place. I recall an actor who put a gun loaded with a blank to his head and pulled the trigger, as a joke. It took him 2 days to die. I recall the TV series was called 'Sweating Bullets", I think the guys' name was Rob Stewart.

Take it from an expert. Movie guns are not 'props'.
