Hockey commentator Don Cherry is in the limelight yet again, this time for complaining that he rarely sees people he believes to be new immigrants wearing poppies ahead of Remembrance Day.

This is all over the news.

It's Don Cherry being Don Cherry and expressing his opinion the same way he always has.

BTW... Good call Fiddledog in placing the article under the "Entertainment" category rather than sports.

Toronto Star/G&M/MacLeans/obnoxious self-serious sports pundits like Bob McCown have been trying to take Don down for years. This is just the latest opportunity for them, that the old guy unfortunately gave them, to go on another rant against him.

For the record this is probably only the second year in the last thirty-five that I haven't worn a poppy, since like high school. Between PM Blackface, the Laurentians putting Alberta "back in our proper place", and the results of that nauseating election I just can't do it this year. I refuse to believe that this idiotic country, as it is now, is what those people in the military fought and died for in those wars. I'm not insulting them, I just can't show deference to a thing I no longer have any respect for at all anymore. Maybe next year will be different but for this year it's just impossible for me to wear one.

the year is 2047, don cherry celebrates his fourth majority government. liberals spend most of their days saying "sir, sir, that's not okay".

One wonders though, how long theyre going to put up with Cherry. Controversies aside, hes just become a crotchety old coot who only talks about the good old days when he coached the Bruins and he only cares about the Leafs. I dont know anyone who watches Coachs Corner anymore.

What no poppy? You must be an ungrateful immigrant stealing our milk and honey.

Its sad that sportsnet and Maclean have to apologize for Cherrys comments while the old cook himself gets to skate away unrepentant and pleased by all the division hes sowed. If they truly feel that an apology is warranted then it should be Cherry who apologizes, not others on his behalf while he refuses to express any regret.

Time to put this obsolete dumb jock out to pasture. Knowing a thing or two about something as trivial as a sport doesnt make someone an expert on anything. And if his employer isnt happy with him using the job they give him as a pulpit for his toxic and divisive views they should terminate his contract. The fact that they continue to employ him speaks louder than any boilerplate apology they continue to offer on his behalf and which he doesnt participate in.

I always lose the things, so I moseyed over to the legion and bought a bracelet.

He's incorrect to say he's not seeing poppies on those in immigrant dress but only politically.

That's a thing us hockey fans have noticed about Don. You don't always like what he's saying but damn, the guy's right.

Here's what he actually said btw.

I didn't even know that was a thing! Dammit! I'd wear that year round.

It's funny, but you can almost hear the chorus of apologists going "But he didn't say anything bad!".

Yes, he did. We heard it too. If most people heard it, perhaps it's the apologists.

Haven't they fired most of their hockey broadcast team already anyway ?

Sounds more like a budget issue.
