Scientists Have Detected an Enormous Cavity Growing Beneath Antarctica

Antarctica is not in a good place. In the space of only decades, the continent has lost trillions of tonnes of ice at alarming rates we can't keep up with, even in places we once thought were safe.

It's the alien's home base. There expanding it so they can invade.

Well then that's quite an abscess. I never thought I'd want to call in a company of periodontists but maybe today's the day!

Researchers at the Institute for Geophysics at The University of Texas, or UTIG, at Austin examined the Thwaites Glacier in Western Antarctica and found that it was being melted from below by geothermal heat released by submerged volcanoes. The Thwaites Glacier recently became the focus of attention after some studies revealed that the glacier was nearing collapse from accelerated melting.

The geothermal heat contributed significantly to melting of the underside of the glacier, and it might be a key factor in allowing the ice sheet to slide, affecting the ice sheet's stability and its contribution to future sea level rise, the researchers said, in a statement. The cause of the variable distribution of heat beneath the glacier is thought to be the movement of magma and associated volcanic activity arising from the rifting of the Earth's crust beneath the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

    Again with the fear mongering.

"Hey guys, the global warming climate change thing isn't working. Got any other ideas?"

"Yeah! Let's tell everyone there is a MASSIVE hole under Antarctica, in which lies a MASSIVE volcano and magma and fire and bad shit!"

"Carl, that's AWESOME! Call the media!"

What exactly is gained from this for them?

Even more disturbing, the researchers say it lost most of this ice volume over the last three years alone.

That is disturbing. What could possibly have caused it? Surely not all the underwater volcanoes honeycombed through that area.

"As more heat and water get under the glacier, it melts faster."

That's important to know, since Thwaites currently accounts for about 4 percent of global sea level rise.

If it were to disappear entirely, the ice held in the glacier could lift the ocean by an estimated 65 centimetres (about 2 ft). But that's not even the worst-case scenario.

C'mon, buddy cough it up. What are you actually saying? Are you saying Thwaites is going to melt soon? If so, just say it. Give us an estimate on when. Or is the timetable of your scary Thwaites melt a secret? Will I need a secret decoding ring you'll supply at the bottom of my cereal box to figure it out, maybe?

If not all we have is what you gave us: "Thwaites currently accounts for about 4 percent of global sea level rise."

Last I heard global sea rise was estimated at about 7 inches per century. So about 4% percent of that, then...

Not scary at all. Sorry to disappoint you.

And one does have to worry what you're trying to scare us about, seeing as you didn't mention the volcanoes.
