The photos are enough to make most people�s blood run cold: a close-up shot of a cougar with a kill, lounging in the backyard of a home on Vancouver Island.

    This is why I carry my .45 with me on any hike...regardless if it's in a wilderness area or not.

    I have a friend that "pacified" a bear with a .50.

    I always used to take a .44 wheel gun as a side arm in bear country. You aren't really supposed to take handguns hunting, but I doubt SRD Wardens would care, so long as wasn't my primary hunting weapon.
