Albertans will no longer be able to buy the Russian vodka Hammer + Sickle in the province after complaints linked the brand's logo to the genocide of millions of Ukrainians.
"llama66" said The goddamn vodka is not linked to genocide. Its fucking vodka. I guess all Russian's and Germans are linked to genocide?
So you know how you can't expect to use a swastika for anything even if it's a Hindu or Native American thing? You know, because the swastika is now indelibly linked to the Holocaust and the deaths of six million Jews?
Well, maybe now you need to read up on the Holodomor in which the goddamned communists murdered or starved to death as many as 7.5 million Ukrainians (many of German descent) in 1932-1933.
The mass murder of the Ukrainians and Ukrainians of German descent was one of the reasons why Hitler went to war with the goddamned Russians in order to bring the German speaking Ukrainians into the (relative) safety of the Reich.
That means that the Hammer and Sickle is as much a symbol of genocide and repression as is the swastika.
And just because it's trendy and fashionable with the kinds of people who'd love to bring back the Soviet Union or impose that kind of crap in Canada and/or the USA doesn't change the fact that the hammer and sickle is still a symbol of genocide and repression.
But...I do not believe it is the place of government to regulate either the hammer and sickle or the swastika.
But since you folks regulate one then you have to regulate the other. Hate speech and all that.

Llamas' point is that the didn't do any of that. It was people.
The Hammer and Sickle is also on China's flag, and we still do lots of business with it. History is important, but so is context. Or, so I'm told.
That would be up to the producer, as well as using legal mechanisms to put the original back on the shelf.
AGLC chose to listen to a few people, and remove a product from sales in Alberta. That can certainly be contested with law, but I kind of doubt that the brand generates the sales here to bother.
Personally, I think it is stupid and prefer lots of options. I can chose not to buy ones that offend me.

Mark one down for Swastika Vodka, made with Polish potatoes !
I wouldn't buy it. Wouldn't buy anything with a swastika on it either. Customers should be left to make the decision themselves though and hopefully enough of them are aware enough about basic history that the distillers take a big financial hit for doing something in such poor taste.

And Canadians and Americans (Natives), and just about every other flag on earth at some point.
This PC bullshit has got to stop.

Oh, and fuck China. Their hammer and sickle represents the genocide and repression of over 100 million people.

They don't even bother restricting the movement and sales of existing, actual Nazi pieces, in Poland.
I don't know if it is Polish humour, or apathy...hard to say.

You sure about that? I ask because an awful lot of companies use swastikas in their logos.
Chase Bank, Columbia sportswear, Sun Microsystems, etc. all use stylized swastikas as their corporate logos.
Look around when you're out and about and you'll see lots of local businesses with stylized swastikas in their logos.
Also, swastikas are a recurring theme in brick paving. Look down and you'll find you walk on them all the time.
