Just the (alternative'!) facts, ma'am: Why there's so much carbon tax confusion

Complicated and often unpopular, carbon taxes are already ripe for misunderstanding, a vulnerability that's only compounded in a post-truth political world.

I saw a woman's gas bill today and adding the CT made her delivery charges double the cost of the gas she used.

Don't blame corporate greed on the Carbon Tax. Delivery charges aren't subject to it, just the cost of natural gas. Neither is electricity.

My delivery charges didn't go up at all.

Just stating a fact that she now pays twice as much on delivery of gas as she consumes. Without the CT she wouldn't be. I didn't say her delivery went up. Rounding up the tax just a bit, its a lovely 20% increase to the price of her gas.

One of these days I better go to the box and get my bill.

How can she pay "twice as much on delivery of gas", but you didn't say "her delivery went up"? Those two statements are contradictory.

It should be itemized on her gas bill how much she paid of each portion of her natural gas bill. The amount she paid for gas should increase a few cents. But the delivery charges are not subject to carbon tax, simply the gas companies whim as to what they will charge. So is she paying more for delivery because of the carbon tax, or just because Atco decided to charge more for delivery fees this month?

My bill also went up. I paid 55 cents a litre for propane, when it used to be 35 cents a litre in October. Market price is 85 cents. But since I buy 1000 litres at a time, I get a discount and free delivery. ;)
