I would counter sue with a theft charge for selling furniture which did not belong to them and then hit them again with a statement that the land was not abandoned as it was placed for sale and was temporarily legally inhabited. Then I would offer them $50 for all the furniture they have already placed in the house as they would be in a jail for a while and I doubt they would have the cash to store it while they serve their time.

Retired people......lots of them, spend their entire winter in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Florida. It's nice there. My grandmother's youngest sister has a winter home in Corpus Christi.

Apparently, old white people from Canada do. I would not recommend Texas as a vacation spot for folks from Dubai. Not that the Texans would shoot you for being a Muslim, but they're inclined to mistake you for a Mexican...and then shoot you.

I don't understand why this is so complicated. If I went on vacation, left my home unattended, and find that somebody had just moved in, all I should have to do is call the police and have them drag the bums out into the street (kicking and screaming if that is what it takes).

This should only involve the courts when the two squatters are charged with trespassing and other offences.

There is the problem. They took money and gave the people permission to enter. Without a written contract, the police don't know the difference between squatters and a crooked landlord just trying to keep the deposit.

I don't like Realtors, but they have their uses - and one is to control access to a property.

According to the CTV article the home doesn't meet the criteria for "squatters rights" to come into effect. Hasn't been abandoned for five years or more.

The fact they paid a deposit is irrelevant. In order to transfer a home there is a whole shit load of legal "mumbo jumbo" that needs to be signed in order to transfer a home and associated property (went through it all when I bought my house). They would have done none of this.

Unless in Texas all you need to complete a sale is exchange cash and spit in your palms and shake hands.

Without a written contract, the squatters don't (or shouldn't) have a leg to stand on. They don't own the home, and the home has not been abandoned so squatters rights they're trying to claim don't apply.

The rightful owners want them out. If the police won't do it they should find seven or eight good 'ol boys who will help them drag the lowlifes (and their crap) out of their house.

This is Texas, after all.
