Apparently, anything beyond the moon's orbit is deep space these days

Wow, I can't imagine four people spending months at a time in such a cramped space. Makes a submarine look like a five star hotel.

There's no gravity that would require you to have good back support. I mean people keep talking about special mattresses that are like sleeping on air. Dishwashers won't be necessary since you'll be eating paste out of tubes. For a shower, they'll send a goodly supply of moist towelettes, and they have toilets  Have a nice trip

Just a pure guess here but it might have to do with weight constraints at liftoff. Anything travelling between planets will need a shit load more shielding against radiation if it's carrying life than if it's just buzzing around in orbit. Although I'm no engineer by any stretch so I could be wayyyyyyy off
