My Sister is friends with Jess. Her Aunt was certainly raising this money saying specifically it was to help Jess. Apparently she redid part of her pool with the money. The family was hoping to use it to help with the costs of getting her back home not in Montreal where they don't know anyone.

Absolutally sicking.

That is indeed a sickening story. Sheryl Matheson should be taken out and horse whipped, to do that to her own blood, pure scum.

$1:
She has been released on a promise to appear in court.

A woman who steals the funds of her critically ill niece has been released on a promise? Really... :?

Released on a promise, yeah, that's kind of cute, in a dark way. Luckily she's unlikely to run, she spent all the money she had to do it already

Jess' mother is looking at setting up a bank controlled trust fund and some friends are looking at some type of event to help regain some of this money. I hope they can but I know there will be some who will say no on the "burnt once" philosophy.

If she dies could her aunt be charged with manslaughter?

I don't understand it 100% but it seems the money would have been used to pay for meds and machines she needs if she came back to live at home right now. These are only covered by medicare when she is in the hospital for some reason. The balance of the money was to go to helping her live and have certain extra rehabilitation things after she finally gets a heart. The money won't speed up her transplant unfortunately. If the heart comes too late then the money is sadly for funeral costs. So lack of money only means extra hardship now and in the long run, leaving her trapped in a city she has no support network in other than a parent, who also has costs of being there.

The family is tough though. After something like her first two weeks in hospital doctors didn't know what was wrong and she deteriorated so fast I think the family was basically told to say their goodbyes. Then by the grace of God they figured out what was wrong in just in time to save her in the state she is in now, and has been for a couple years. If you've seen "House" on TV where he does the zero hour brainwave that saves the patient, well basically that is what happened here as I heard it. Just no real happy ending yet.
