I would be all for the natives not paying her welfare if we could do the same thing and not pay welfare to all the off-reserves natives, make them go back to the rez and get their welfare from them.

I'm going to reserve (tee hee) judgement on this one. The Chief makes some good points. Plus, when he claims that the mother was causing disturbances at reservation stores, it seems to fit. Afterall, she moved away and abandoned her baby; not exactly a paragon of responsibility and sound judgement.

It seems to me that they just want to get rid of her and have found an avenue to do so through the welfare system.

Whether the Band pays her or welfare pays her, it makes no difference, the end result is still the same.

The taxpayer pays.

Indian and Northern Affairs has advised Phillips to file a human rights complaint.

I'm sure the Natives will fully comply with a Human Rights Tribunal decision. If they can't use the HRT to keep their victim industry going then they won't show up.

My understanding is that the Charter doesn't apply to Native reserves. When the govt made noises about bringing it in, the chiefs had a fit and the idea was dropped. Turns out it's racist to bring equal rights to natives - who knew.
