So, if they cant follow the regular diplomatic channels to enter countries, shoot them for the spies they are.

$1: The families say Bauer and Shourd, who had been living in Syria, were hiking with their visiting friend Fattal in July 2009 in northern Iraq's Kurdistan region, near the Iranian border, when Iranian forces took them into custody and accused them of intentionally crossing it. Is the fountain of youth located in that area? If not I can't see any sane reason to be hiking there. I say leave them to their fate and file it under thinning of the herd.

Exactly - who the fuck goes hiking in Iraq, never mind Iran. Give them all diplomatic assistance possible, ie none, and let the Iranian govt sort it out - don't cut any deals with Iran, wich is what Iran is really hoping for. I'm sick and tired of western dogooders getting themselves into trouble in fucked up places, and then our troops are supposed to risk their lives to recue them and we're supposed to pony up the bribe money. These people are as bad as the "refugees" that go back home, get their asses thrown in jail and then cry that we're not helping them enough.

As has been said here, play along the borderm of Iran and get caught, expect to pay the consequences. This is a personal responsibility issue - no ignorance involved. These guys knew what would happen if they were caught, yet they made a conscious decision to carry on. Sorry, pay the price now. What are you looking for here? Another Jenkin's Ear?

I agree with everything said. I would like to add that I dont think that Iran really thinks these hikers are spies. I think that Iran's decision to arrest and try these people is really an attempt to insult and bait the US and they are really testing the limits of America's resolve.

If you want to hike there for god knows what reason, contact Iran first to get permission to enter the country.
