One has to keep in mind that stats can be manipulated to say whatever a party wants them to say.

In order to truly have an opinion on the matter, you'd have to be a firearm owner. That's the only way to thoroughly understand exactly how the registry affects different owners.

No doubt this will just get swept under the rug like everything else the Conservative government doesn't care for or believe in.

In all fairness, there are some decidedly non-partisan folks here who don't think the registry should exist (Dr. Caleb comes to mind).

While I never would have supported it had I known that it was going to cost $2 billion to get up and running, with the very minimal costs (under $4 million annually) is incurs these days, I don't see a problem with keeping it if police forces around the country find it useful. Depending on who you talk to, they either do (chiefs of police across the country) or they don't (Constable Kuntz' buddies).

I think this report shows that it is fairly effective.

72% in spousal homicides involved longguns
77% of law officers killed by longguns
murders by handguns are down 10% since 1995

It sure as heck won't save me from a gun obtained from the black market therefore criminals will circumvent the registry and we wasted two billion dollars (plus four million each year). All this registry accomplished was give a couple dozen worthless bureaucrats equally worthless jobs. Wonderful!

While we're at, why not ask the British how well their registry is working?

I wonder what the police do when they go to a call where there are no registered firearms? Criminals don't register their firearms, it's far better to go to a call expecting firearms.

I will trust the RCMP & Police cheifs over the Conservative Party and the PMOs unfactual partisan retoric.

fact still remains there is only 140 homocides by firearm per year in canada, although that generates an emotionals response from all of us, an agenda to disarm canadians is totally overreacting

nope, he held cain accountable for his actions. thats whats missing in this whole plan of taking away gun from lawful owners, no accountability for the criminals. they will get coddled instead. cain was cast out.

And the car registry your province/territory runs will not protect you from getting run over by a stolen car either. Yet I don't hear anyone hear bitching about having to register their car...

Great logic there. So I guess only firearm owning MPs should get to vote on the bill to kill the registry. Awesome. Then only gay MPs should be allowed to vote on issues of gay rights, female MPs on issues of women's rights (abortion, equal pay for equal work, etc), second language speakers on issues of language rights. Shuts out the male WASP vote pretty quick, that kind of reasoning does.

How exactly does the registry lead them to assume there are no weapons?

If they would go in assuming the possibility of weapons in the absence of the registry, why can they not keep making that assumption with the registry, but with the occasional confirmation to boot?
