Finally some sanity when dealing with Natives. [B-o]

Although, I somehow don't think this will be the end of their crusade. I can see a court challenge and barring that we'll be back at square one when next millenium a non Conservative Federal Government gets elected.

I think their only concern is that if they change the name of Stanley Park, they would then want to change the name of the Stanley Cup....

And they probably would. They've already changed all of the division names, why not the cup too?

If they did that they'd have to stop drinking Champagne out of the Cup and switch to Lucky Lager.

That's because the next headline will read:

"Stanley Park name to remain unchanged,
(natives) launch $50 billion lawsuit for hurt feelings"

It's always funny until it becomes true.

Damn right the name should not be changed. Trev said it best (previous thread) ... SCREW THAT!

$1:
"It's always been XwayXway. It's been that way for millennia," he said

It's been a park for that long? Please....

Unfortunately I agree with Freakinoldguy... a court challenge is coming. But why NOW? Why has the name been perfectly peachy with everyone until NOW? Petty cash running low perhaps? Nothing else to go after?

It just makes no sense that the land which is the park has a aboriginal name. As someone previously stated, does this mean natives hundreds of years ago had provincial parks too?

If the name change dies down, expect it to resurface when a new majority government is voted in. If not, we'll see a court challenge coming. My suspicion is they want the name change to go over so it can be used to some ends. Maybe a land claim?

I've heard a couple of people now suggest that they see that as a real possibility. I hope this all just dies down and we carry on, but we'll see.

A brief history of Stanley Park, dating back some say over 3,000 years.

$1:
The documents suggest that the native settlements within the park boundaries are at least 3,000 years old.

$1:
"The Squamish Nation is very much open to any which way the name could be incorporated."

That's great. It's called 'Stanley Park'.

Good, I'm glad to see see somebody is getting tired of being PC.
Calling something XwayXway would lead us in the States to ask what the X stands for in the name. Stanley PArk makes a hell a lot more sense.

I wonder what they would like to change the name of the Federal Capital Ottawa to?
