The guy is a sleeze ball, he should have been bounced from the party when he sent an aid to impersonate him in a radio interview back in '01.

You know, as someone who once lived in his riding, who helped form the electoral momentum for his ousting (before moving from the riding), who ridiculed him in the past, I feel sorry for the guy now. He's a human being, and he's been treated like shit by his party.

He won several elections, and was given a meaningful position (Chair of the Conservative Caucus) after the '06 election. Most of this, though, was a result of vote splitting, and only came to an end once the left got their stuff together in 08 and united behind Duncan of the NDP. The writing was on the wall, though, for a long time. The impersonation debacle, his failure to attend candidate debates, his "laziest MP" award, and the NDP taking second place in '06 from the Liberals with a strong candidate should have been warning that he was on thin ice. But when he lost, all his party have him was a "fuck you very much" for losing them a seat and he was cut loose. All manner of misbehaviour is acceptable until you lose an election. The party seems to have learned their half of the lesson, though, and wont let Guergis risk them yet another seat.

I have to wonder if his DUI flowed from that casting aside. Once a golden boy within the Conservatives, a minority face in a party accused of being rich greedy white guys, dumped like a bad date when he failed to produce the only thing that matters to the Conservatives: a seat.

Yea, he should have been dropped by the Conservatives, but because it was obvious that his heart just wasn't in it, and he should have been let down easy. If the impersonation debacle was enough to dump him, she should have been told so in 2000, told his nomination wouldn't be accpeted, and he should have been allowed to transition. Hell, maybe they would have kept the seat.

He's a douchebag, no argument, but douchebags are people too. He's beenbeat up enough. I really hope the committee shows him the humanity his party didn't, and just leave him alone to pick up the pieces, and love his kid in peace.

I know, the poor dear. He's just scamming and conning his way to make an honest living. If he wants to be left alone, I suggest he get an honest job, stops driving drunk and maybe give up the coke too.

Its politics, this is how it works, he'd have known that after all those years in. Its the same for every party. Once your utility is used up no one cares. If one doesn't like that then they should stick to handing out campaign fliers at the very most. Lots of fakes and phony friends. I worked on federal party executives, regional organization and leadership campaigns, was even offered a low level job in the Opposition Leaders Office but turned it down. I left after 10 years of organizing (moved out of the country) and knew exactly what was going to happen. No one cared, no one emailed, thats how it is, get over it!

Oh sure make excuses for him

Look maybe the loss of his ego trip and self centered attitude (no not speculation, first hand knowledge) certainly is a hard landing to take. What led him to drinking and drugs was not his loss of "Fame and power" but his inability to be strong enough to deal with it like most of us, on the chin and get back up and keep moving forward. Handing out his years old MP business cards, tells it all right there!
