Doesn't sound to me like Paxil was to blame, looks like just another teen who cracked.

Also reminds me of this http://www2.macleans.ca/2010/05/03/gend ... s-opt-out/

The drugs and alcohol combined with a prescription anti depressent is what did it.

She had 4 perscriptions to battle depression and anxiety including sleeping pills. Seems like alot to me for a young adult. And like Shep said throw booze and coke into the mix = outcome not good.

They help far more people than they harm. Should penicillin be banned because some people have a deadly allergic reaction to it?

BuckieH BuckieH:
Anti depressants should be banned.

I've seen them turn a few lives around for the better so I'll have to disagree on that one with you.

$1:
Sara Carlin had everything to live for: She was smart, athletic, beautiful and pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor.

Who are you to judge?
$1:
It was only later that she learned Sara had complained of anxiety and depression to her family doctor and had recently been prescribed Paxil, one of the antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

“I said, ‘Why on earth, Sara would you be on antidepressants?’ I was astounded,” she recalled for the five-member jury. “Why, why would he be giving these to her? This was a wonderful, happy girl.

Apparently not, and really, even as a mom, you don't know everything...

$1:
While Sara lost her much older brother to a drug overdose in 2000,

I am so so sorry for your loss...

$1:
So this need for antidepressants, she said, came out of the blue.

“She was very troubled, much more troubled than any of us knew,” her mother acknowledged.

You contradict yourself...

The description under the news heading on CanadaKA's homepage reminds me of an old saying;

"want to hear all your faults get married, want to hear every good about you, die."

No. They should be prescribed and taken properly.

Genetics plays a big part, some people are more prone to depression and feeling 'the blues'.

This one certainly ain't Plaxil's fault. She was prescribed it to feel better. She didn't. Not all anti-depressants work.

Not every Tylenol is guaranteed to cure a headache.

She had everything to live for says mama. Well, it seems she got it wrong otherwise daughter wouldn't be dangling off a wire would she?

Seems to be a parenting disconnect here.

Many people are embarrassed or ashamed of feeling depressed and will do anything possible to hide it from loved ones.

Not to sound too calous, but after reading the article I've gotten this feeling that mother was rather oblivious to her child's anguish.

Teens ahve enough social pressures and this girl was pulling off 90's, tutoring, being involved in baseball and hockey; it's all a lot to handle.

Furthermore, the mother also claims to have assumed that her daughter coped very well with her brother's drug OD, but enver really verified it or talked to her daughter about it. When she said the revelation about the anti-depressants being an out of teh blue discovery, I really started to get the feeling this mother wasn't that involved in her daughter's life and didn't pay attention to the signs or involve herself deeply. Then again, teens rarely open up to others, let alone their parents...
