I've been taking note of a trend in police misconduct, job related or otherwise, over the last year and find a close majority of officers involved (RCMP and Muni services)seem to have 5 or less years of service. Just a theory but since 2007 Muni forces and RCMP have been recruiting like crazy. Edmonton was running three classes a year for recruits at one point and RCMP was starting a new class every week compared to one a month in the past. Couple this with a number of stories I have read, as well as being told first hand, that point out that there are less people interested in becoming cops, this means the recruiting pool is not much larger but more must be hired, which makes me wonder if all these incidents are due to having to lower standards for applicants to get in, at least until they solve the top heavy retirement problem.

I'll add a footnote to the lack of more applicants comment and point out that Ontario seems to be counter to that trend as OPP and RCMP have more applicants then they seem to handle. This will break down soon as baby boomer officers are going to retire eventually and then those service will be scrambling. I know for a fact that RCMP applicants in Ontario have to score much higher (15%) on entrance exams than applicants in every other region to get accepted into the recruiting process. Yes RCMP officers from Ontario have to be smarter than their peers. I'm waiting for hte Charter challenge on this one for discriminatory hiring practices. I was also told by someone in RCMP recruiting in Regina that quote "Until this year (2009) it was like we were letting nearly everyone in and overlooking a lot."

What it comes down to is mediocre applicants getting hired often translates into mediocre officers and turning away good applicants means loss of potential good officers, which leads to a high number of cases of officers who've been hired in the last 5 years more likely getting into trouble since they should not have been cops in the first place.

Actually Yogi, my statement was more or less meant as a comparison to the other recent on-line predator snag where it was obvious entrapment and yet no-one is arguing it was. Either way, both of these disgusting individuals deserves to rot but the rules are obviously VERY different between this cop, and the guy that was nailed just recently that we had a thread about.

I frankly don't see this kind of thing as 'entrapment' any more than it is entrapment for the police to arrest men who cruise for prostitutes in seedy neighborhoods.

There was a story in The Netherlands that boggled my mind too. A 12 year old girl was missing, and later found dead in the backyard of a 26 year old guy. Dunno, but is pretty simple, right? ANYONE would be charged with murder. Right?


This guy was a cop, and he was charged with manslaughter. The girls parents convinced the prosecution to charge him with murder. I am sorry, but WTF is that all about????
