Japanese men are of course the gropers (hence the female only trains), but Japanese in general have a far more liberal view towards sex than most Westerners. 'Chikans' are a fringe element of Japanese sexual society, just like some of the kinkier stuff is here. Things like cosplay are far more common than chikans. Keep in mind, that gropers on the subway are not a Japanese only phenomenon.

Japanese people in general are more willing to talk about sex too, without any of the 'Christian shame' we have here. Topics like masturbation, oral sex, costume play, etc are talked about with ease. I've never checked the stats, but it was my impression while living in Japan that extra-marital affairs are far more common (hubby nailing his secretary in the evening and wifey banging someone else in the afternoon) than they are in North America (those love hotels are awfully busy all day long).

Given their obsession with rape, all-in-all, I'm glad they don't have an armed forces. Rape of Nanking and all that.

I've got no issue with nudity and sex not being considered a sin or shameful. Rape however, has precious little to do with sex. It makes others suffer for the rest of their lives, so I do not tolerate it.

I was forever being called 'shojo' behind my back because of my red hair and whenever that happened I would turn and say "Nandeska?" in a tone which translated as "WTF did you say?"

The apologies would flow as the person who called me a red-haired pirate/demon found themselves humbled and humiliated as rude in front of a gaijing (foreigner).

Losing face and being ashamed about sex are two very different animals. I guess I should have used guilt instead of shame if I wanted to be clearer.

Many Westerners (Christians mostly, but others as well) have taught their children that sex is a dirty, shameful act, whereas the Japanese do not view it the same way.

Like I said, I disagreed with the game itself, but then again it could be argued that most Japanese porn is far more degrading/mysgonistic than Western porn (at least that's the opinion of several Canadian/American women I know).

And they do have armed forces, the most powerful in Asia (excepting the US I would argue). They have more modern planes, ships and tanks than the Chinese, and a better space program and level of technology to back it up. If the Japanese ever decide that they NEED nukes for their own protection, it wouldn't take them longer than a year (3-6 months is more likely) to produce them. Despite the fact that they spend a mere 1% of their GDP on the Self-Defence Forces, that amounts to $50+ billion annually. For example, their capital expenditures budget (what they spend on new weapons systems each year) was more than the ENTIRE Canadian defence budget for most of the 90s.
