I've always found booking photos to reveal the 'real' person. They're very unguarded and, in a strange sort of way, they're very intimate. You get to see the real person and not just their public image.
In this case, we're getting to see something horribly ugly.

The fact that she thought she had the right to choose if her daughter would live or die like if she was her possession clearly shows that she had herself no respect for her daughter whatsoever.

She is clearly bruised on her face. For a woman to resort to killing her child, she would have to be reduced to a state of worthlessness. Perhaps she was battered? Or emotionally abused. "We ruined my husband's life." That quote could be an important clue, in this tragic case. Don't jump to conclusions until all the facts are in.
