it doesnt seem bad if you just see it as a motel you pay monthly. i mean if youre only there for a couple months, you dont bring all your posessions, then it would be a smart move really.. just as long as you get out before the cabin fever sets in lol

$1:
When the former low-income residents were evicted, local housing activists complained the city's policy of shutting buildings because of safety violations was depleting the stock of low-income housing in the area and contributing to a rise in homelessness.

Yeah, how dare the city care about safety. Seriously, do these people even hear the words that come out of their mouths sometimes?

Still, I see their point.
The moment the buildings are renovated, they're not going to be rented out to low income residents anymore...

I suppose it's smart, despite the fact it's like trying to live in a closet. Anybody that cannot afford a decent living space for what they can afford will probally like the idea, like college students. It's liveable and from the description of it it's a nice looking closet space. To some people with low income, they sounds appealing. Bigger homes or lofts are always better desired but if you cannot afford them than this is your next best choice.

It's better than living under a bridge.

Vancouver is becoming a city of contrasts. We get the rich driving up housing prices, many of whom don't even live here full time. One penthouse is renting for 500k for the 2 weeks of the Olympics. It does come with it's own saltwater pool tho.

It's tiny, but if you've ever lived out of a hotel room for any length of time (I did for 6 months once), it's not much different. It's a better solution than building giant lofts that go for a million each and forcing more low income people to live under bridges.

What, you never bummed around and slept rough the odd night or two when you were young? Never bivvied in the backcountry? Extrapolate from there to having to live like that.

Of course not. If private investors pay for the renovation then they need to be able to recover their investments.

Of course, Van can pass a law like New York had that guaranteed rent controlled apartments to residents after renovations. The consequence of that law were scores and scores of abandoned apartment buildings and literally miles of blight.
