If he is polygamous, shouldn't he be in jail?

Have you really not followed this story? He's not in jail because for years the govt held off prosecuting him because if he won freedom of religion clause it would make polygamy legal in Canada. The attorney general finally started prosecution against advice from council but the supreme court dismissed the charges.

How cares how many "wives" a person has? You can only legally marry one in Canada, but if you choose to have your own marriage ceremony with a number of women, or men, (or animals, as they do in India) who cares? There should just be no legal recognition of those marriages.

But, the real scandal is that these guys are "marrying" underage girls - ie statutory rape. That's what they should be prosecuted for. I can't understand why the govt isn't going after them on that basis. No charter protection there

Human-animal marriage

Human-animal marriage, i.e., marriage between humans and non-human animals, is not recognized in law by any country at present, although historically people have married animals as part of religious traditions or to bring good luck, often involving elaborate ceremonies. Such marriages as are allowed by tradition, or within a culture, are often symbolic or ritual, rather than the more usual recognition of a relationship.

I'm reminded of a Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin Musical called paint your wagon red. They wanted to be both partners with the same woman, so they declared her a legal mining claim.

Was that an open pit or did they have to drill a shaft?
