Judges know all this when they sentence. It's not REALLY double-time credit. That's just semantics. But this way he gets the same prison time (5 years) plus 3 years of community supervision. It may not be politically attractive language, but it meets the same ends as if he got the full 10 years with statutory community supervision after 6.

$1:
The sentence recommended by the Crown and defence would give Scott double credit of five years for time already served and require him to serve just two more years in custody, followed by three years supervised probation.

Which means he was in custody for 2-1/2 years prior to trial and credited with 5. So long as the judge increases the total sentence accordingly that's okay.

The maximum is 10, out in 6 with parole and supervision. This guy's gonna do 5 plus 3. Six of one thing, half a dozen of the other.

$1:
According to a sex offender progress report filed in court, Scott told a counsellor he raped the victim because he "just want(ed) to get laid" and "didn't think I would get caught."

Good reason! [/sarcasm]
$1:
Defence lawyer Darren Sawchuk said his client is still coming to grips with his own sexual abuse at the age of 12.

Which makes him a danger to society till this matter is dealt with, which won't happen, so we might as well not want him to wander the streets anymore. 10 years is imo not enough.

Just attacking women because you "wanted to get laid" is the most dangerous of rapists you can think of, especially since there is not really much remource (sp?) shown.

I bet the guy felt pretty sorry for himself when the judge wasn't too pleased with what he did.

Boo Fucking hoo, I for one am tired of excusing rape because the perp was an abused child. 20 years min should be for rape, like Murder it's a crime tha effects the victim for the rest of their life, we are too lax on criminals of all sort.

I agree, hell, I'll go one step farther: this should be an automatic life-sentence, no change of parole. But given the law the way it is, he's getting pretty much the maximum. The "double-time" credit is just smoke and mirrors; nothing to get upset about.

I still vote for execution for rapists. They, and murderers (terrorists too) deserve nothing less.

Once again the judicial system fails us. But at least it's a small step in the right direction.

If we could get more judges to actually attempt to punish criminals, maybe we could get the system back to where it was intended to be. Protecting law abiding citizens and not mollycoddling criminals.
