Doesn't the BC Labour Relations Code have an essential services provision that would permit the BCLRB to order these employees to not endanger the lives of the public? The question is rhetorical since the answer is yes, although the pols in BC in the past have been reluctant to use it for fear of pissing off the unions.

Yes, it is stated in the article. They will give essential services but nothing more.

I don't understand the union here. They say there are not enough paramedics and that's the cause of the overtime. But, they demand higher wages... If the government can't afford to fill the vacant places, how giving higher wages is going to help ? That's not very logical. But, well, unions are rarely logical.

Everything they do is essential. I hope the public are not endangered because of a labor dispute?

Not yet. But I can see their point. Constantly (being expected to) work(ing) overtime for too little money is reason enough to walk out of a job for anyone in any other job.

If the government is not filling positions it is culpable too. A more comprehensive story would have explored the issue from that avenue as well.

Well, obviously, there is something structurally wrong... WHY is the government not filling positions? Does nobody want to work for shitty money and lots of overtime?
Would you?

I wonder if the paramedics service is exclusive to the government. Maybe some private companies could help there. In a borough of Quebec City, the mayor hired some private police because the service given by the City Police is poor.

I did some research into becoming a Paramedic in BC, it was very interesting how their pay is calculated, which is by the number of calls you respond to vice a salary. Also for the first two years you must work in a remote region and the pay is not enough to maintain a basic standard of living.

So maybe the Paramedics in BC have a legitimate gripe and it is time for the province to step in and do the right thing, but considering it is gordo and the Libs I expect things to get a lot worse before they get better

No pay increase in 8 years.
According to 3 friends in the service over $4 an hour less than in Alberta.
The contract ran out over a year ago. The paramedics have been able to strike since April and held off because they knew a lot of people are going to blame them regardless.
The BC gov't is still pissing around and not negotiating.
There is no law that says you HAVE TO work overtime.

So if they need drivers, they'll have to hire them and no one's going to apply with wages so shitty.
Cough up the bucks Gordo. The Olympics are NOT more important.
