if laying it on its side is going to "write it off" do you really want another one the same, maybe try the new VOLT, 40,000 to buy, 5000 to replace battery in 5-10 years, sounds like they better keep the R&D going cause there not going to sell many for that price. maybe people that own them will have to start chaining them to light polls, like bikes.

The Article The Article:
There were people posing with his vehicle, taking pictures, Spaans said.

"They were telling me, 'Oh, it's your fault for buying the thing and parking it on Whyte Avenue'. "

I think it's time for police to regularily show up on Whyte avenue and just start smashing heads in. The place is friggin' a zoo after 8pm.

i agree, the only way they will stop problems or get some control would be with more police around, then they can weed out the bad ones and get things under control

Tipped over? That all?

I remember when the Firefly first came out, a buddy of mine had to wait four days for us to bring the crane back over to the garage side of the mine site to remove his Firefly from the roof of said garage.

$1:
Kevin Spaans wonders who would be dumb enough to overturn his Smart car.

Dumb enough?

Raise your hands people.... how many of you have thought about doing the exact same thing when you saw a smart car?

I know I think about it everytime I see one... I just don't do it because it's illegal, but it looks so damn easy.

And if it's a write-off simply because it was tipped over, then exactly how safe are those things in the first place?

I've heard so many people defend them as being one of the safest cars to be in when it comes to vehicle accidents, yet I seen police photos of a smart car that hit a 18-wheeler head on and the entire front of the car was flattened right back to the trunk, while they also showed the driver being hauled out who was ripped in half from the accident.

And the guy looked way to big to be driving one of those things.

If you ask me, those things are death traps and I don't know who would be "Dumb" enough to buy one (reference to the guy's own comments)

Dude. c'mon. what are you talking about? head on with an 18-wheeler? Nothing is safe from that. Bad example man. Show me an example of any car that was hit head on with an 18-wheeler and you'll see the same thing, SUV, truck, whatever.

At first I found it all rather amusing. We did similar stuff when we were kids. Put small cars that were parallel parked on the street, onto the sidewalk. We never went out of our way to cause actual damage though.
Then I read one of the "guilty parties" was a 40 yr old. My amusement waned.
Then, when I read that the car supposedly has a 5 star safety rating, I laughed my ass off.
I'm NOT condoning what they did, but I still find it kinda funny.

Making a car (the firefly) that could be picked up by four drunk men and carried off was a bad idea.

So, since I've often thought of driving around with a forklift and flipping Hummers on to their roof - that would make destroying someone elses' property OK?

And, yes, that amount of damage would probably write off a Hummer too. Insurance 'writes off' a vehicle if the damage exceeds a percentage of the vehicles value.

I've seen 18-wheeler collisions with other vehicles before.... certainly not as bad as what I saw with a Smart Car.

I've seen regular sized cars, pickups, SUV's, Vans, etc... some would be crushed to the diver's seats.... some beyond.... this thing was flattened like a pancake and all that was recognizable of the Smart Car was its back wheels and tail lights.... that was it.

My point was that there's hardly anything in the front of those to protect you from a head on collision.

Take a Honda Civic and smash it into a Smart Car head on..... tell me which car you'd rather be in.

^ And this is just with a mid-sized car.... the damn thing not only gets crushed right to the driver, not only does the driver appear to take some heavy impact/damage.... but the car goes flying, becoming an even more dangerous projectile to those around the collision, such as people on a sidewalk or intersection.

And how much more damage would the passengers receive from flying around like that?

Meanwhile the Mercedes almost stops right where it impacted and the majority of the damage is localized to one side of the front of the car..... while the entire front of the Smart Car disintegrated. If you see the above view, the front of the Mercedes seems to impact right into the area of the smart car driver's leggs, if not chest.

I could see someone in the mercedes walking away from that or at least surviving.... whoever would be in the smart car would be so lucky.

Did I even say that?

No.

Did you even read what I did say?

"I just don't do it because it's illegal, but it looks so damn easy."

It's illegal, therefore logically one would assume that it's not "ok"

It's not ok to do, which is why i don't do it. :?

Where you ever got me saying it was "Ok" to do is beyond me.

Well I guess next time he should purchase a heavier vehicle.

Added:

But if you thought about doing that to hummers with a forklift, obviously you see my point.

He said who would be "dumb enough" to flip his car. I was merely just saying that I imagine a lot of people thought about doing that to smart cars because they just look so light and small, that it'd be easy to do.

I never said what they did was right.

He may think the people who did this were dumb, but so far it would seem they got away with it..... Overall, size, weight, safety, practicality and all that, I think purchasing a smart car is dumb in itself.

I know if I had one, someone flipping it would be the first thing on my mind, all the time.

They don't tell you things when you buy a SMART car like, when you have a head-on collision with a dog, you lose.

If you wern't fk'd in these cars, you'd certainly be in a smart car.... the damn moose would wear the car like a necklace and walk off.

Don't try and prove something to me :), I simply said you should use a better example than a head on collision with an 18-wheeler and you did. Like I say it was a bad example, the civic example is a better one. So we're done.

Mind you (and more pertaining to the subject), no one pushes over motorbikes just because they're small, death-traps and parked on Whyte Avenue. Ever see what happens to a motorbike when it has a head on collison with a civic? yet nobody's suggesting that if you buy a motorbike you're stupid and deserve to have it knocked over.
