i agree that just letting the person go is the safest plan....but don't fire a guy for taking action.

I completely agree with the company policy, for the reasons stated.

I was going to say it wasn't right, but the guy had been warned once before. Being an old union guy, I'd have given a suspension so it sinks in rather than fire him.

I'd say that guys dedication and courage would look better than anything a crappy gas station job could add to his resume and I hope he gets a far better job because of it.

It's weird how different countries differ in this...

It was policy when I worked at a gasstation in Holland to do exactly what this guy did. I must add though, that we were behind bulletproof glass.

I hope a local businessman hires him right away.

He shouldn't be fired for trying to do something good...
If he wants to risk his life then let him.
At least they should have cut his pay or something some like that.

I don't think it is legal to cut someone's pay in Canada, unless you have their consent.

Demoting them is plausible. However, when you significantly change an employee's job description, labour code allows the employee to define the demotion as a 'constructive termination'( I think that is the correct term).

A constructive termination gives the employee the right to voluntarily walk out the front door, and he is entitled to the same ternination pay, and severance pay that he would be entitled to if he was laid off........although, you can expect not to get paid until you take your employer to court.
