if the federal government bows here, they will have to bow to other groups on other issues. a strong handed approach is necessary right now.

I think it's the opposite really. I think comprimise is necessary. Just don't arm the guards here... what's the big deal?

On the US side of the river. The Canadian border crossing is on the island which is reservation. Relocating the highway is an option but it's going to suck.

It's not that big a crossing so shutting it down and blowing the bridge might be an option too.

$1:
And locating the post closer to Cornwall would mean that Cornwall Island residents would have to clear Canadian customs before they travel to their Canadian homes.

Coming from where? The US? Well, so does everybody...

Anywho... Close it, keep it closed and move to the US side. It's gonna cost a dime, but hey, the Mohawks will get their way. What they do forget, is that they will probably be searched every freaking time they cross the border... Oh wait, they don't have to carry a passport, right?

:) my google doesnt show border posts.

so either move the border post to the Cornwall side, make the Indians
go through customs to get into Canada ( they will love that )

or retake the border post, seal it off from the rest of the Island.

Put a big fence around the reserve and any of the roads going in or out should be manned with armed guards and dogs with really big teeth.

I think the Govenment loses no matter what they do in this situation.
1. they close the post and move it= Natives get their way
2. they leave it open but don't arm the guards= Natives get their way
3. they do what they wanted and natives keep up the blockades=Natives get their way
I agree with riden though, just close it and let the US deal with crossings through there.

Take the cost of the move out of the next handout cheque the government writes to this community.

I have an even better solution: Natives - stop interfering with the international border or YOU'LL be moved. Smarten the fuck up right now, because there's a patch of land on the south-western edge of Ellesmere Island that'll do just nicely as the new, replacement Mohawk reservation. Maybe you folks can conjure up the spirit of Andrew Jackson for a little lesson on the ins-and-outs of Native relocation.

Or... wait... I got it!! Let's just kill all the Mohawk natives... with GUNS!!

Really though, can we just NOT arm the border guards here? Why is this an issue?

Why? Because you cannot let a group of people decide about federal affairs. ALL borders should be guarded with armed guards. WTF is the use for a bordercrossing with guards otherwise?
Please...
