Good question. It has been known for quite a long time that a number of groups of people discovered the America.

I thought the Asians discovered America first, either by coming over the land bridge through Alaska or from the south by small boats.

I went though the American school system in Chicago after transferring from Toronto in 1st grade... all we got was Columbus until later on...

Asians were the first to arrive and many think that they came in waves, with the last being Polynesians who settled along the Pacific North West, or at least traded and intermarried with locals. There are too many similarities in art, architecture, culture and physical features to rule it out.
