i wonder how they will really monitor this. Will they have sting operations looking for renegade merchants that are just giving the bags away? *GASP* how horrible!

A $500.00 purchase? Perhaps the retailer could then throw in a $1.00 re-useable bag...

I just came up with a great idea! The whole point of charging for grocery bags is to eventually eliminate them all together, and since I always use the plastic bags in my waste baskets, I will now be using the cloth bags for both purposes! Well, why not?? Ya bring your groceries home and put them away, same as always, then you can use one of the cloth bags for your garbage, same as always, and when it is full, or like me when it starts to smell so bad that you detour around it, At least until you just absolutely cannot stomache the odours anymore, then just take the bag out and empty it into the bin, toss it into the washing machine, using up more water, detergents and electricity, and then voila! It is ready the next time you go grocery shopping!

When I came to Montreal last week, and I started shopping with my grandmother, I was totally dumbstruck by the fact that you needed to pay for these stupid, plastic bags. I think my jaw dropped at the sheer stupidity of it, especially since they don't offer paper anymore. At least give us that fucking option

That's one of the things that pisses me off when I go to Superstore (aside from terrible service, poor selection, etc). I understand the rationale for the bylaw, but how are they going to enforce it?

LCBO near my downtown Toronto condo does not distribute plastic bags at all. Paper only, I asked them why, they said environmental concerns of local residents.
No other LCBO I have been to has a "no plastic bags" policy anywhere in Canada yet. I'd be interested to know if anyone has seen anything similar in their 'local' LCBO branches.
Really though, plastic bags are fucked up, non-bio degradable.

romanP romanP: Or bring your own bag. Planning ahead is key. I don't live here. I don't have the bags, and I'm still used to Windsor, which, amongst all of its problems, at least isn't stupid enough to pay for bags. If they want bio degradable ones, I really don't mind, but what happened to customer service? Why not just let them give them out free?

I live in Montreal and there is something really stupid in the groceries: Each time I go, if I forget to ask for paper bags, they put my things in plastic bags. Why ? I always want paper bags. That's much more handy. They take more stuff and are easier to handle. My father has a grocery and I worked there a lot when I was young. Plastic bags were an exception.
Oh and btw commerderkai, I've never seen that here that you have to pay for plastic bags ?
