Why would anyone support a ruling like this?!

What do you mean? This is exactly the "eye for an eye" (pun unavoidable) approach touted by many on this forum.

True but some of those that follow that ideal also think immigrants should be deported and homosexuals should be forced back into the closets. I guess I should of asked how can a nation of people endorse such a ruling.

I totally support this because it may act as a deterrent to future acid attacks. I hope they pay attention to this in Afghanistan.

How is it a deterrent? Capital Punishment is not a deterrent for murder, all this will do is make other people "feel good" for crippling a man.

I think you might be surprised at just how many applaud that ruling. These are the same people we often point out that their beliefs mirror countries like Iran when they demand such treatment for canadians comitting acts like this and no offence but to a man they support the war under the belief that the taliban are getting their just deserts.

Our nation and justice system are designed with avoiding this very thing in mind. Thats why it errs on the side of compassion, rehabilitation and presumption of innocence which often leads to people serving less time then some people think. Thats why we have a whole slew of threads decrying "Liberal judges and justice system" when the whole idea is to not be a country that does this.

Fact of the matter is that Iranians don't have the option of protesting such a sentence, while we in Canada are free to let our Govenment know when we disagree with them, so in that light a nation of people did not endorse such a ruling.

Good point. While our courts occasionally get it wrong, and I, like most, would like to see people jailed longer for most violent crimes, I think our justice system is pretty much the best in the world.

I personally have no problems with this ruling, an eye for an eye is exactly what is needed.

Any asshole that throws acid on somebody becuse she rejected his marriag purposal deserves the same treatment he gave.

There is that saying, "Don't do on-to others that you wouldn't do on to yourself".

That’s fine if it something like being polite, but although I am not religious I feel a person should at least have a opportunity to redeem themselves.

Sharia law is hardcore religious baboons taking their religious books and forcing its 1600-2000 year old out of date content down society's throat.

Lucky for us, we have secularism. Unlucky for them.

Take note.

I posted this in the Taliban appropriate thread.
Before we get all enthusiastic over Sharia law, we need to remember that it strips human rights from more than half the population. Women are posessions and remember that there are no gays in Iran for a reason, because they all get killed.

Yet you champion Canada adopting a justice system akin to theirs.

Oh I know you are going to say "eye for an eye for the guilty".

What you don't realize is that many years before you our forefathers realized that justice systems that did taht were often wrong and more about vegeance then justice.

Thats entirely why our system progressed from the medevil dungeons of yesterday to the prison system of today.

Lo and behold we have less crime. Go figure.
