I think the parents had the different opinion before this terrible incident.

It was their girls, going to school, that suffered the attack.

The parents obviously thought that it was in the best interests of everybody that the girls have an education, and these children are the future of Afghanistan. Anyone who wants to defend these people by calling them some brand of "freedom fighters" should have to talk to the parents.

Using acid on the girls is not just about their going to school, it's also about their not wearing the face-covering burqa. The prevailing thought is that once their faces are disfigured these girls will wear the burqa out of necessity.

The burqa is an act of oppression and it sickens me to see it worn in the West where women should be free from this kind of crap.

You know I really try my best to keep an open mind but I'm sorry, the many secs of the muslim faith (and many other faiths for that matter) are seriously archaic. I don't care how progressive a thinker you consider yourself, trying to justify crap like this as well as the other forms of hate that spew forth from these fundamentalists automatically puts you in the looney not living in the real world category in my books.

Exactly what "freedom" is being fought for here? The "right" to assault, maim or kill innocent children over some religious or ideological minority position? Can anyone seriously claim that these actions are justifiable and these children were legitimate targets?

Actually, they were wearing burka's at the time which prevented them from suffering more serious injury.

Attackers in Afghanistan have sprayed acid in the faces of at least 15 girls near a school in Kandahar, police say.

They say the attack happened shortly before at least six people were killed in a bomb blast near a government building in the city.

Doctors say the six girls were wearing Islamic burkas or veils which provided them with some protection.

Correspondents say the attack is likely to have been carried out by those opposed to the education of women.

A spokesman for the Taleban denied involvement in the attack.

The former Taleban government - ousted from power in 2001 - banned girls from attending school.

'Not safe'

"We were going to school on foot when two unknown people on a motorcycle came close to us and threw acid in our faces," 16-year-old Atifa told the BBC.

"I want to ask the government why they cannot protect us, we girls want to study but the government is not helping us. We want better security."

She said the attack took place on Wednesday morning outside the Mirwais Nika Girls High School.

Officials say that two attackers used a toy gun to spray the acid and fled as soon as people came to the assistance of the girls.

Atifa said she did not know why anyone would have attacked her and the others.

"I don't know why they did it," she said. "Kandahar is not safe. But we can't stay at home, we want an education."

The BBC's Ian Pannell in Kabul says the incident has shocked ordinary Afghans.
