great news, maybe the tide is starting to change in this country. Why so many people 'fear' senate reform is beyond me...

I do support the general idea of reforming the senate, but I doubt I agree with nearly any of the details offered by Harper and his ilk.

I absolutely do not support each province having the same number of senators as each other province. Ontario is 121 times as populous as all the territories put together, and I can't imagine we'd leave them out of the senate altogether, as they're represented in the house. In the states, from which this idea is no doubt copied without much thought, California is only 70 times as populous as Wyoming. I absolutely could not support that kind of variation in representation.

I would also like to see some sort of preferential ballot, or proportional representation. The senate is supposed to be a chamber of sober second thought - subjecting it to the same radical swings as we see in our legislatures under the distortions of the SMP system runs counter to that ideal.

Hurley, if the Senate is supposed to be a Sober second thought...isn't that why you want provinces having the same amount of Senators? So the House, who basically is proportional to population, would have a select few provinces dominate, while others get screwed. So basically an equal Senate would limit the power of Ontario, and Quebec from pushing through bullshit laws and deals that only contribute to them.

That's why there's a limit, to give a sober second thought without any province dominating

Yeah, let's copy the USA some more!

Let's call our leader President, go to fixed four year terms (like was suggested a couple weeks ago), and adopt their constitution! Then they can admit us to the Union and all you American wannabes can finally be happy!

Screw the Senate, why don't we just get rid of it. The whole group is the biggest waste of skin since John Homles Bar Mitzvah.

OMG time to loosen your panties, your rampant anti-American is starting to poke threw.

Grow a pair, only fools think senate reform is not justified or fixed election dates are not a good idea, yeah it has been working SOOO well for us hasn't it. God forbid we grow up as a nation.

Then again, you like the idea of PM's calling elections in 3 years just because their popularity is high. You like having un-elected upper chamber that is accountable to who??

No wonder this country was heading into the toilet lead by the mighty morontario.

god help us if there is another opinion besides Mcgoofy and his marry band of idiots.
