On first blush it seems silly, but then I can appreciate that they don't care for modern "interpretatons" of classical works. I get tired of it myself in my own church. I don't need to hear some asshats atonal version of Greensleeves or Carol of The Bells complete with an improper diminishing ninth, I want to hear either the original work in its perfection or, if a composer so desires, then perhaps their original composition.

These idiot composers who are so arrogant to think they can improve on the works of Pachelbel, Beethoven, Mozart, and etc. are little more than vandals to me.

Who would dare repaint the Mona Lisa or sculpt a new David and expect to be taken seriously?

So, yes, I can appreciate the Vatican's wish to get back to original works of spiritually uplifting music.

A lot of people, and they would be taken seriously too. Derivative works are a perfectly acceptable form of art. But we're talking about religious fanatics, and they like to keep dead things in glass boxes for 2000 years.
