Somehow this reminds me of Robert McNamara's clumsey tampering with the developement programme which produced the F111. In an attempt to produce a common Navy/USSAF aircraft it ended with no hardwear for the navy and an inferior aircraft after a considerable delay.

Perhaps---they are/were both ill conceived programmes initiated by the LIBRANOs. Actually if the LIBRANOs hadn't lost that election to Diefenbaker---CD Howe intended to axe it for the same reasons that the Tories did.

How so? The conservatives back then didn't replace the Arrow with anything of merit in comparison to what they gave up. The conservatives right now are at least considering something better, that much is clear from the article.

Just what that 'something better' is remains unknown, but considering the MASSIVE cost of fixing the Victoria Class Subs we purchased (which should have been OPERABLE at point of friggin' purchase... ) it's still cheaper to purchase newer subs with better capabilities than to hold onto these wonderful lemons of the Librano era..

At last count, the escalating cost to fix the four subs was around 890 million hard-earned, taxpayer dollars.

The usual Conservative mouth-breathers are shamelessly choosing to play politics with this issue, it seems. No surprises there!

Oh... [huh] And so what do you call this :?:

Hmmm... PDT_Armataz_01_02 Sounds to me like someone's playing by "special" rules here, what playbook did you pull those rules from? Did you get them from, Chretien or Martin's :?:

You were playing politics here before you even accused someone else of doing that. So let's just be adult enough to play the politics without whining about it. PDT_Armataz_01_06

Funny, wasn't it just a couple of weeks ago that you said the subs weren't a priority and had a bunch of righties try and tear you a new a$$hole? Looks like you were right, Streaker.

If you can't see the parallel, then you must be blind. The Liberals spend a small fortune on a weapons platform, and then the Conservative government that comes into office plans on eliminating it.

Dief's PCs considered something better too...remember the Bomarc?

We have to have Subs. No Question. As a country with LOTS of coastline, scrapping them would be rediculous. Uprgrading would be a one time big cost, but it has to be examined how much therafter we'd save on repairs.

I see where you think there's a parallel but that other than it was a PC government then as now is where it starts and also, for your argument, ends. The Tories appear to now be in mid-talk attempting to find a suitable replacement for the current Victoria Class submarine program. And that is IF they decide to scrap the current subs. From the article it also appears that repairing the subs are an option. But since these subs were purchased with little thought (obviously) for their Arctic usefullness than it's no wonder the whole program is in all likelihood going to be replaced.

The Victoria Class subs are of not much use in the Arctic waters. And you can replace the current subs we got with new ones (the U212 comes to mind) that are much more hardy in Arctic waters and more capable of defending Canadian waters than the old, run-down, lemons the Liberals purchased.

I mean really... how the hell did the Liberal's purchase these subs without knowing just how friggin bad they were at point of purchase? Come on... and I don't see where replacing these subs automatically means NO SUB PROGRAM anymore for Canada. Scrap these death traps and purchase new ones. Then we STILL have a sub program, in fact we'll have a BETTER sub program and all the fears of those who think the Tories are out to scrap the program entirely are up in smoke.

I highly doubt that a PM that's willing to spend hundreds of millions, maybe even billions on a new artic base or two, training areas and increasing our military presence in the Arctic can realistically do so without a sound sub program. I think some of the liberal supporters are just pissed off that this sub program, the very one that the Liberal's concieved (and piss-poorly I might add...) is about to be replaced by a better one. One that was NOT thought of by someone with the last name's of Chretien or Martin. It's just coming off as a whole lot of fear for no good reason as all.
