Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg leaves U.S. aboard catamaran

Swedish teen climate activist Greta Thunberg hitched a renewable-energy ride back to Europe on Wednesday, sailing into the Atlantic on a trip she hopes will get her to Madrid in time for another climate conference, and then home for the holidays.

Thunberg tweeted as she took to the sea on the 48-foot (15-meter) catamaran of an Australian family that answered her urgent appeal for a low-carbon way back home after the United Nations climate meeting she had planned to attend in Chile was moved due to political unrest there. She encouraged followers to track their journey online.

Before departing, Thunberg reflected on her time in North America during an Associated Press interview in the cabin of the catamaran. Some people in power, she said, simply lack a sense of urgency when it comes to global warming.

“The situation in Canada and the U.S. is basically the same as to where I come from: It is the same arguments that are being used to delay action. It is the same methods that are being used to mislead people,” she said Tuesday as they prepared to leave Hampton, Virginia, near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.

It's a nice gesture, but really, we HAVE built a world where oil propels everything and until we have alternatives, one can't fault her for going by an oil fuelled method. To blame her for traveling by an oil powered machine is just a form of shutuppery. Something deniers on this forum always complain about.

Your post is utterly meaningless unless you mention her having a mental illness and how much money she is raking in through this tour of North America.

She's getting paid? I want to see the numbers. I might become an activist if the amount is right.

It's cool that these people are helping her out. No matter if you agree with her or not she is a young lady who appears to be standing by her convictions. I find that hard to say about a lot of the high profile people of many causes.

93.8% of quoted statistics are wrong.

79% of people come with baseless percentages that rely on only 16% of everyday facts. 92% of society knows this.

Right! She should be at home in school, not having her childhood stolen by Schwarzenegger and DiCaprio.

When she's 19 and still in high school don't blame the people she is blaming for stealing her childhood. :P

I'm often perturbed by the adult men than fawn over her given that she looks closer to twelve than sixteen. The ones I've encountered on Twitter come off as the kind of creeps that are into lolicon.

Probably Fiberglass. But it still has a diesel backup engine.

Or Carbon Fiber. Both use resins made from petrochemicals.

But that sequesters the carbon instead of making it airborne. ;)
