I am actually stunned. I thought you had to have 'air brake' training to get your class 1 license? Or is that just in Alberta?

$1:
the provincial government still allows new semi drivers to hit the road with no training.

Oooh, neat. Can I drive a loaded school bus without any training, too?

Mostly. You can drive an unloaded school bus with a regular car license. Same with a motorhome.

A loaded bus license is a lot less training than you might think.

This falls under provincial jurisdiction, so it depends on the province. In Alberta, you need air brake training if the vehicle you're driving has air brakes, and that includes buses (like transit or coach buses).

FTR, Alberta just announced the introduction of mandatory training for all Class 1 & 2 drivers starting next year.

In Alberta, to drive a school bus, you need a Class 2 and an 'S' endorsement, which is additional training. I agree it's not a lot of training, but starting next year, all new school bus drivers will need to take the same mandatory training semi drivers do.

It's a start. Now if we could get the tourists in the Winnebago to get licensed. ;)
