Mostly. You can drive an unloaded school bus with a regular car license. Same with a motorhome.

A loaded bus license is a lot less training than you might think.

This falls under provincial jurisdiction, so it depends on the province. In Alberta, you need air brake training if the vehicle you're driving has air brakes, and that includes buses (like transit or coach buses).

FTR, Alberta just announced the introduction of mandatory training for all Class 1 & 2 drivers starting next year.

In Alberta, to drive a school bus, you need a Class 2 and an 'S' endorsement, which is additional training. I agree it's not a lot of training, but starting next year, all new school bus drivers will need to take the same mandatory training semi drivers do.
