Well there will be plenty of construction and infrastructure jobs opening up in Syria now that the government seems to be regaining control. Wouldn't flying home the unskilled and uneducated be cheaper in the long run? They can all take an autographed pic of Tater Tot the Vapid with them and maybe Sophie can sing them a song mmmmm-hmmmm.

Well, you folks could exempt the Syrian refugees from the minimum wage which would encourage employers to take a chance on hiring them.

Watching the news last night there was a story about a job fair they held for these people. From what I saw most of them that attended seemed to genuinely want to work but, because of language and other barriers their prospects are limited. But then again some of the expectations were a little unrealistic to.

One guy wanted to be an actor and another was an electrician who wanted a job as an electrician. The problem with expectations like these are that first off if you're an electrician in Aleppo I'm pretty sure that your papers wouldn't qualify you to be one in Canada and secondly being an actor in Canada is about as logical as being a pool cleaner in Grilse Fjord.

So, I don't know what they're being told about their prospects when emigrating to Canada but the truth may be something totally different.

Two thoughts: many of these Syrian families have a lot of children, making it next to impossible for them to shoulder the financial burden of daycare. That, along with the fact that most refugees follow a strict form of Islam which requires women to stay at home and take care of the kids, means you can be sure that more than a few of these women refugees will be "falling behind."

Also--why is there "little likelihood that Syrian refugees to Canada will become an underclass"? Doesn't the Muslim experience in places like France and Germany prove otherwise?

It all sounds like the most dangerous sort of wishful thinking to me.

Unemployment rate is 6.8%, which is not "most" Canadians

What a misleading report. The article doesn't say half are unemployed, it says half ARE employed. That's a different thing. People NOT searching for work aren't unemployed. Women don't work in the Muslim world and that attitude isn't likely to change immediately upon arrival in Canada. We also know that Muslim women who are native-born Canadians participate less in the workforce than non-Muslim women. So we would only expect, at most, half of the adult Syrian refugees to have taken jobs. That doesn't mean the other half are unemployed. If half of adults are employed already, that would mean almost ALL who were looking for work found it! That would be an incredible success story, well beyond anyone's wildest dreams, that nearly all the refugee fathers have found work so quickly.
