Sounds like what the Dubya admin used Michael Gerson and David Frum for, use some big-hearted saps to put a kind face on a government that was no better than the ones that preceded it and in most aspects was remarkably worse than the ones that preceded it.

These guys probably don't think $8,000 per day is that high. Current MP salary is $170,400.00 per year. That's the "Basic Sessional Indemnity", meaning what back-benchers get. I could give you the breakdown. But after you deduct weekends there are only 260 weekdays in a year. Manitoba has 8 statutory holidays, including "Louis Riel Day" (3rd Monday in February). Quoting the Manitoba website: "Remembrance Day (November 11) is not a General Holiday under Manitoba labour legislation, however most industries in Manitoba are not allowed to operate that day, with some specified exceptions." Boxing Day and the Civic Holiday in August are not statutory holidays, but most employers take them off. The Monday following Easter is not a statutory holiday either, civil servants get that one off although no one else does. That's right, Good Friday and Easter Sunday are religious holidays, but there's no such thing as "Easter Monday". I'm sure someone will find some obscure religion that does, every day of the year has religious significance to someone, but it's not Protestant nor Catholic. Add all that and you get 12 holidays per year, so civil servants don't even work 250 days per year, it's only 248. Then subtract vacation to get actual working days. MPs take how much vacation? When does any work actually get done?

Take an MP's salary, divide by working days, and you get something like $8,000 per day. I suspect that's where they get that. (They're disconnected from reality.)
