$1:
Volunteers with the IFSSA began dividing the large bag into 700 smaller plastic bags, each holding enough chickpeas for a family of four or five to use for a month of food preparation.

700 family months of high quality protien. 8O

Nicely done! R=UP

I hope they provide cooking instructions. I'll bet most of it gets thrown out.

Hell yea! You can make an amazing winter soup from them for example.

And Hummus!

And Hummus!
That's terrorist food. Same with falafel.

Sautee? I always boil them. Did you mean simmer?

I like some falafel but hummus to me is disgusting. Chickpeas are right up there with lima beans for me. The taste and texture to me is gross.

And keep in mind that I'm someone who likes durian.

Sorry, yes, I meant simmer. I was thinking about french pea soup with boar bacon, and mixed them up. [drool]

That would be easy too, take the soaked peas, make a Mirepoix, add a ham hock or some bacon and some garlic, simmer an hour or two . . . [drool]

The winter soup I'm thinking of is very smooth, and is spiced with cumin. Very hearty, and none of the usual 'chalkiness' you get with chickpeas. Plus, it's more protein than a steak with none of the fat. :)

Punjabi Channa (Chickpeas) Masala [drool]

Hummus even more [drool]

And I'm talking about proper freshly made Hummus, none of that store bought flavoured crap!

Just give me some Khuboos ( Kinda like Pita bread, only more fluffy and soft ) and hummus and I can live for months just on that !

Damn ! Now I'm hungry ! :?

But preferences aside - it's an amazing donation! Too bad it's required. :(

Yep. Same with roti and dahl. Unfortunately while I can make a decent hummus (heavy on the garlic) the best efforts of my Punjabi friends to teach my how to make a good dahl have been in vain. That's because the recipe changes every time they tell it and there's no sense of measuring the ingredients. Maybe I should look up a good recipe on line.

I did just make a good lentil soup tho, with garlic sausage.

Well, we'll never cure poverty or homelessness. We can mount an all out effort for Syrian refugees (I have no problem with that) but as for our own people...meh. It's all their own fault because they're just lazy.

One of the vendors at the Farmers Market is called "The Happy Camel" and it's hummus is famous! I always get it, some baba gnoush, Labaneh and lots of their hand made pitas.

Now I'm hungry too!
