Depends on where you are. Prairie coyotes are nothing to be afraid of. East coast cyotes, however, have bred with the red wolf, I think? Anyway, they are the worst possible combination. They will go right into town like a coyote, but are aggressive towards people like a wolf.

All we have are timberwolves around here...beautiful animals. Our hybrids(Husky-wolf) that we got at 8 wks of age have sadly passed. They were like the hybrid shown here except they were almost entirely white.

Owned a half-coyote years back. Got into the pigpen and tore apart two piglets, my 8 yr old daughter tried to stop it and it turned on her, it was in such a bloodlust.
I'd run out with a .22 hearing the commotion, it didn't even get to spring at her.
In all other respects, it had been a fairly nice dog, but slow to learn things.
I'm 6'2"... a lone coyote or wolf isn't scary to me, a pack is....

We had two. The male was definitely more dog like in behaviour and the female more wolf like. She was never a threat to kids, but strange adults - enter at your own risk.

They aren't that far removed. Wolves, Coyotes, some foxes and many dogs can breed amongst themselves. I think it even goes as far as many wild African dogs can mate with pet dogs.

There used to be a pack of 30 or so near the dog park that would try to coax other dogs to 'come play!'. I don't know if they were ever successful, but they didn't like my friend's wolfhounds. 8O

Aren't red wolves themselves the result of coyotes and grey wolves mixing?

I think the largest impediment to breeding is the fact that the wolf will kill the others first. It's usually a male wolf and a dog bitch rather than a male dog and a wolf bitch.

My sister had her rescued dog DNA typed. It's 46% Alaskan Malamute, 46% Dachshund. The rest is an assortment of dogs worldwide.

No matter which way you run that equation, it does not make sense. Given that, I believe that 'love will find a way'. ;)

There will always be temperament or societal difficulties to dogs breeding, but they will eventually get it done. But the point is, they are still genetically compatible enough to make offspring that also reproduce. A Coywolf can reproduce with a Husky cross. Unlike a horse and donkey.

That's what bugs me most about human 'race' bigotry. We might all look different to some extent, but we aren't so different that we can't reproduce.

As I've pointed out before, there is more genetic diversity between two groups of Chimps living 20 miles apart then there is between all 7 billion plus of us. We're the hillbillies of the primate world. Dogs, coyotes and wolves can all interbreed because they are still essentially the same species. Australian Aborigines and native Americans were isolated from the rest of humanity , a lot longer than dogs and grey wolves ever were.
