A few years back, maybe 15 tops, we saw an otter crossing Dallas Road. The gait/lope was unmistakable as it crossed the street heading to the water

Would most likely be a river otter. They're quite common here.

It was quite large......I remember a few of us stumbling on some while swimming, when we were on a school field trip...I think it was up by Thetis Lake.

They are quite large - at least a meter in length. I was quite surprised to see beavers move back into Thetis Lake as well.

The river otters used to be thick as stink up in the PT Renfrew/San Juan river/Fairy lake area. The first time I saw one in the water I thought it was a seal it was so damn big..... 8O

Hopefully it's a sign they are doing well and expanding their territory.

$1:
... Though the marine mammal has since re-established itself there and in pockets on B.C.'s Central Coast...

One of those pockets is in my neighborhood. :D I see them fairly often swimming around in the small bay beside my house and last week saw a few of them climbing out of the water onto the rocks before losing sight of them in the trees/brush. No camera in hand of course, which was too bad as it was low tide and they were on the exposed rocks where I could have gotten a good shot. There seems to be a few of them that hang around here regularly. Not sure how many but I should ask a couple of the people who live on their boats in this bay if they might have an idea.
