Ukraine’s richest man calls for rallies against separatists
Factories sounded their sirens in two cities of eastern Ukraine on Tuesday and steel workers held a peace rally in support of a call by Ukraine’s richest man for protests against armed separatists who plan to disrupt a May 25 presidential election.

In his strongest condemnation yet of rebels who have seized strategic points in towns in the heavily industrialized Russian-speaking east, Rinat Akhmetov urged people to unite “for Donbass without weapons! For Donbass without masks!”

Akhmetov, a coal and steel magnate who has an estimated 300,000 employees on his payroll and enjoys huge authority in the region, said Ukrainians should stage a “peaceful warning protest” at their companies from noon on Tuesday when sirens would sound across the region.

The initial response to his call, however, was modest.

Kiev’s pro-Western authorities, who hailed Akhmetov’s move hoping it would trigger a groundswell of support from ordinary workers to change the dynamics on the ground ahead of Sunday’s election, may be disappointed.

Separatist rebellions, fuelled by cross-border propaganda from Russia, erupted in the east after Moscow-backed Viktor Yanukovich was toppled by mass street protests in Kiev in February.

At first he was supporting them, got trouble with Yanukovich which want's to enter the Ukraine on Russian tanks. I put 99% that Ahmetov was helping to transfer money, firearms and people to separatists. Kyiv sold him something, and this one is better than Russia gives. We will never know what it is.

Interesting. When it was first reported, it sounded like the steelworkers were doing this of their own volition and a countermovement to the separatists was starting. No such luck, it looks like. My guess is most people feel on the horns of a dilemma, where neither Kyiv nor Russia really holds that much attraction for them. Or it's that slav fatalism where you just keep your head down and go with whatever. They know whoever runs the show will be doing it for themselves, not for the people.

That pretty much sums up the last 1000 years in the region.

No, not. I read the articles when they first started. It did not take a Rocket Scientist to figure out why.
Reason I was able to figure it out.

China has Putin where they want him. Needing them desperately.
Deep discount Vlad. Your economy is tanking.

BEIJING — President Xi Jinping of China and the Russian leader, Vladimir V. Putin, were unable to announce an agreement on a natural gas deal on Tuesday, despite high expectations that mutual political interests would help finally push through the project.

Instead, commercial concerns continued to dominate — specifically, the price of the gas, which China and Russia have been haggling over for nearly a decade. After the meeting between the two leaders, Mr. Putin’s spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, said that talks were continuing.

According to Xinhua, the Chinese state news agency, after meeting Mr. Xi in Shanghai, Mr. Putin said, “I’m glad to be informed that the two sides have made significant progress in the price negotiation of the east route of the natural gas project.”

Mr. Putin had also been expected to agree to China’s demands on price in part because of the weak Russian economy. The International Monetary Fund projects Russia’s economic growth in 2014 will be 0.2 percent.

But China was in no hurry to sign a deal, said Shoichi Itoh, a senior analyst at the Institute of Energy Economics in Tokyo. “China already has enough gas from Central Asia, and now Myanmar, until the mid-2020s,” he said. “Unless Russia made a compromise on price, China has no reason to sign it.”

In recent weeks Mr. Putin has stressed repeatedly that Russia sees its economic future with China, which is on a trajectory to surpass the United States as the leading global economic power. Mr. Putin’s emphasis on China also is consistent with his conservative nationalist ideology, emphasizing family values and patriotism and criticizing what he views as the West’s moral decadence.

You live with whoever will do you the least amount of immediate harm, not who will do the most good.
