You look at the sentences given to perps that did not return the child unharmed, and this seems wildly disproportionate. I don't really have a problem with this guy's sentence, but the fact many worse offenders are not given long term or dangerous offender designations.

I surprised that they found this guy compos mentis in the first place. As I recall, the whole kidnapping incident was seriously nutty. I suppose that he is dangerous and needs to be put away somewhere ... like a mental hospital if there are still such things in this country.

Yep, we need places that keep people away from society, but aren't horror pits - keep em in there long time, but give them a decent life. We do have forensic institutions, but this guy might not be severe enough to qualify.

He's not within the realm of "normal", that's for sure but he hasn't really shown that he is dangerous, either.

This isn't his first time, not sure last time the child was unharmed, so yes, think think he's dangerous. I'm just comparing him to guys that do really horrific things and still get out after a few years.

So, he's not exactly Boo Radley, then?

Boo Radley was innocent. This guy's not, but he just doesn't seem to be one of the horror stories we allow to walk the streets - you know where the police put out a warning because there's no legal hold on the guy - why aren't they declared long term or even dangerous offenders?

Summary execution comes to mind as a possible solution to the incorrigible.
