What percentage of our Olympic athletes are gay? I expect that 10-12% are ... about the same proportion as in the general population. I understand the human rights aspect of it but really, how much of our team is actually threatened by this weird Russian law?

10-12% ???? Where on earth are you getting your numbers from?

I had heard somewhere along the line that the gay population was about a tenth of us. I see by reading a few polls, stats. that it is somewhere about half of that

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_percent_ ... rld_is_gay

(I chose this one because it is relatively easy to read but it seems to tell the same story ± as some of the others).

It reinforces my argument, though. How much effect REALLY does this have on our Olympic team (except maybe as a general affront to human rights ethics)? Should they be penalized with a boycott because of this?

Did you see this one concerning gay Olympic Athletes though?

$1:
There are more than 10,000 athletes competing at the London games, but when the gay website OutSports.com set out to count how many were openly gay, it came up with 23.

There's a more nuanced explanation here.

Stats Canada says about 2% of Canadian identify as gay or bi. Among Olympic athletes I would expect the males to be slightly below the average number, and the females a little above. Based strictly on stereotypes, of course.

I'm sure the woman's hockey team up the average considerably.

Plenty of women (straight or otherwise) drink beer.

I've never, ever, seen a woman light up a cigar.

Many guys seem to find it sexy/hot. For me it's just kind of blah unless she is doing it to tease me then it is either funny, sexy or just pathetic. It all depends on the situation and who she is and the reason behind her doing it.

2% is far far too low. Remember, that's the number of people who CHOOSE to say their gay or bi on the long form census (which is now non-mandatory too).

I agree that 10% is too high. I would personally say that the number is likely 5-7% of the population (including closet cases who aren't open).

Who cares what the percentage is?

Let's take a quick peek at what the modern Olympics is about:

Help to build a better world through sport practised in a spirit of peace, excellence, friendship and respect.

Banning an willing participant, that adheres to the rules of the sport, goes directly against the fundamental tenants of the Olympic spirit.

Fuck Russia on this one.
