Guess there must be too many hippies living in all those little towns for them to turn a profit! ;)

No one will miss a free newspaper except maybe the people who lined their litter boxes and bird cages with them.

I'd miss ours. I love the freebee's we get but then again I just love the printed media and hate online newspapers. Must come from not having them in my formative years because they wouldn't deliver to a deployed ship, assholes. :D

But seriously the problem for these newspapers is the economy. In small town anywhere free newspapers are paid for by sponsors and when the economy goes bad the sponsors dry up which means the paper is no longer viable and shuts down.

It's simple economics and has nothing to do with readership.

With a little luck, Sun Media's attempt to start a news television station will finally die a death.

That might be true in the larger markets that Sun is killing off, but 8 of the 11 are in small towns. People there WILL miss them without a doubt.

That's true and it's why some services - like the post office and a few others - need to be run by the government. Otherwise, corporations will simply abandon rural parts of this country because they can't make enough profit there.

And that's coming from a tried and true city slicker, not a rural resident.

The free was 24hrs. They can still line their litter boxes with the free left Wing rag called the Metro.

$1:
L’Action Régionale in Montérégie (Québec).
The Lindsay Daily Post (Ontario).
The Midland Free Press (Ontario).
The Meadow Lake Progress(Saskatchewan).
The Lac du Bonnet Leader (Manitoba).
The Beausejour Review (Manitoba).
Le Magazine Saint-Lambert (Québec).
Le Progrès de Bellechasse (Québec).

Don't see a newspaper called 24 in that list...oh wait, as I said, 8 of them WEREN'T the 24 being eliminated in larger centres (Calgary, Edmonton & Ottawa). :P
