It's hard to imagine that China and Russia are natural allies. the Chinese have watched the Russians move steadily across northern Eurasia over the last five hundred years, practically encircling the ancient Chinese empire. Surely, the Chinese need be more suspicious of Russia than of the U.S. and (modern) Japan?

This is just postulating so they can attempt to intimidate the Americans with their combined might when it comes to disputes in the region. If anything serious were to happen they'd be a each others throats faster than porn star on a pole.

You may be able to teach an old dog new tricks but it's still an old dog.

I still think we should be trying to ally with Russia. Old dogs may be old dogs, but this isn't the cold war anymore.

If they ever get rid of that former KGB Colonel we may be better able to. But, until that time they're just a more capitalized version of the USSR with a new facade.

Even with Putin in charge, the west could take steps towards better relations.

Example, Syria. While I don't see why we should be taking sides, Russia has their naval base to be concerned about. All taking sides caused was angst between the west and Russia.

The only way Canada will ever be able to have a better relationship with Russia is when Canada finally recognizes the fact that Russian territorial waters include everything above 75ºN latitude.

Yeah and they want Alaska back, too.
