It is the American way.

So...what?

Dion has found something to wage his electoral battle: "Canada has a prime minister who thinks that the United States is not only our ally, but also our model," Mr. Dion said, accusing Mr. Harper of "mirroring" U.S. President George W. Bush.

$1:
Clearly Dion is not wrong on that when he says Canada has an -almost detrimental- relationship with the US.

and how has it changed in the last 3 years?
maybe all those years of Liberal governments has something to do with it?

In May political leaders of Canada, US and Mexico signed a treaty called North American Security and Prosperity Initiative which is meant to Reinvent borders,
Maximize regulatory efficiencies, Negotiation of a comprehensive resource security pact, Reinvigorating the North American defence alliance and Creating a new institutional framework.

How is it that this pact was signed by PM Stephen Harper with little Canadian awareness at all. The treaty was passed unnoticed, futher increasing our ties with the United States. Just goes to show how sneaky the Harper Government is, laws are getting changed however they don't parallel Canadian interest.

When will the Canadian government realize that such ties to the US make us unable to have an independent economy free from dependency on what happens in the States.

I'm sure you'll be fine with it once the Democrats take office in January, assuming this meaningless pact is even worth the paper it's written on.

It is impossible to have an "independent economy". Basically every country in the world is somehow tied to the united states economically. The world is becoming more and more interdependent with each passing day. Security and prosperity partnership does not re-invent borders, and to think that with Dion in office all of it would suddenly stop is just foolish.

There is obviously no way we can be completely indepndant obviously but i would say Canada has moved more towards a reliance standpoint.
I would like to see more partnerships with Europe.
The US is on its way to a deep recession, we should try not to go down with them

Europe is on the way to a new dark age. We should not try to go down with them either.

Our economy has never been and never will be free from the United States. Like it or not we are neighbours to one of the biggest and most powerful economies in the world. Anyone who argues we should weaken that relationship as opposed to strengthening it isn't dealing with a full deck.

As well, no country in the world is free from dependency of another. For as much as we are tied to the US they in turn are also tied to us through our energy and natural recourses. Show me one economy in the world that is completely independent from any others. It just doesn't exist.

The advantages to strengthening the North American economic interest and trade agreements far out weigh the disadvantages particularly now that we are competing against trade unions such as those that exist in Europe and Asia.

Nearly 90% of Canadians live within 200 km of the border with the United States.

Time for an election then, I'll be looking forward to it.

Lib minority most likely outcome.

dion is dreaming if he thinks he can actually win anything , he has yet to gain any new seats for the liberals and lost 2 in by-elections and 2 more when liberal mp's defected to the conservatives . one because he wouldn't allow him to vote for a budget that was good for his own riding. and like 10 liberal mp's have announced there retirement since dion because leader as well . so he has yet to make any gains in the liberal numbers in the house . more they have been going down .

On the other side, Conservatives' scandals are not forgotten.

Demian_164 Demian_164:
Being tough on crime is a good thing. I just read in the sun the other day an article by a former toronto policeman, discussing the issue of gun violence in the city. I cannot remember all of the statistics exactly, but one of the astonishing things was that people convicted of prior acts of gun violence and drug offences were constantly being granted bail time and time again, only to commit more crimes. The revolving door needs to stop for people who have absolutely no respect for the law. It costs lives.

That's the big joke,Harper hasn't been tough on crime. He didn't even touch the Young Offenders Act.

Actually the young offenders act has been modified into the Youth Criminal Justice Act a while ago
