raydan raydan:
I don't know about you guys but if I saw someone pointing a gun at me, it would be a duck and cover or zigzag running moment... if I saw someone coming at me with a knife, I'd find something fast that I could use to smash his face in.

True story... twice in my life I've had someone point a gun at me with bad intent. 8O

Raydan Yes if you can grab something, if being attacked by someone with a knife, but dude be very careful. 20 odd years ago was shown a video for training about knife attacks on cops. Attacker needed to be at least 12 feet away (if he is running at the cop) just for the cop to pull out his weapon and fire. Still the cop got stabbed. People with knives are very deadly be prepared to take wounds if you are in a fight. IF you are be determined to live and thus willing to kill your attacker. Never give up never quit. If seriously wounded and attack is over do all you can to stay alive.

Kind of my mentality. Someone comes after me the fight or flight instinct seriously kicks in. IF it's fight I fight not to win but to live. So far been lucky and not needed to kill to live but was close a couple of times.

the way I see it, nothing is ever going to 'stop' these attacks, we and when I say we, I include 'western democracies have open and free societies. Is it possible that putting forth laws that try to stop individuals from obtaining a firearm if they have some form of mental illness..sure. Seems reasonable, but it likely still won't stop mass shootings. Which may I add, are at an all time low in the US despite what people think.

Banning a firearm is not the solution, people will always get what tool they need somehow. Even in Canada with our restrictive firearms laws, 99% of all the shootings in TO were with illegal guns smuggled in from the US. So if people think banning handguns will work, then you must guarantee that no one will ever get shot with a handgun ever again...if you can't then it doesn't work and all you have done is remove privileges and rights from people who didn't do anything wrong.

If this is an 'all time low', you might need some remedial statistics courses.

(there were 217 deaths in the first 217 days of this year, for perspective)

Edit: Correction, 292 mass shootings. 1300 people.

that is # of deaths, not # of mass shootings..small but important distinction. And overall violent crime rates are dropping in the US.

You didn't write 'crime rate', you wrote 'mass shootings'. Mass shootings and deaths by mass shootings are both at record highs.

Only 24 lone wolf mass shootings a year... I guess that's OK, nothing to see here.

I can't remember what thread and now can't find it where someone was asking about the UK / London gun laws. To the best of my knowledge gun ownership is VERY restricted. With that said the mass rioting a few weekends ago had gun shootings and at least 1 death from gun shot. The rest of the deaths and major injuries were from stabbings. (going off my fallible memory so If I got some of it wrong it's not intentional)
