Sure, he's critical of Nenshi, but that is because of Nenshi's ideology (tax & spend, transit/bikes are better than cars, etc), not because he's Muslim.

Frankly, I don't blame him - both city councils are fairly loose when it comes to taxing and spending and they are also both quite anti-car, preferring to sink billions into BRT/LRT and next to nothing for other road infrastructure. The problem both sides of the argument fail to understand is that we'll need BOTH - more roads for cars AND bike lanes and transit investment to keep up with growth.

The suspension and pending reinstatement of Wildrose MLA Derek Fildebrandt reveals "great divisions" within the party, and could be evidence of an internal leadership struggle, according to one political scientist.

Duane Bratt with Mount Royal University said the whole controversy "shows a power struggle between Fildebrandt and Brian Jean."

He said the party's handling of the situation raises more questions than answers.

"Was it Brian Jean who solely suspended Derek Fildebrandt Friday pending a caucus meeting this morning? Did that caucus then overturn or revise Jean's suspension? We don't know the timeline of how those things played out," he said.

If there is internal jockeying for leadership, it's clear that Fildebrandt has his share of supporters, said Bratt.

Ten bucks says Brian Jean is out as leader by the end of the year. Whatever her flaws were, especially her ego and gullibility with the way Jim Prentice fooled her, Danielle Smith was probably right about one thing: there's too many hardcore ideologues inside the WRA. They can't even get along with each other, making their own party ungovernable, which means they'd be a disaster if they ever got elected as the government. Here's hoping the PC's can get their act together before the next election because if they don't then the NDP are going to be the least-awful alternative to the prospect of a WRA government. He's not whinging - a lot of other Canadians DO view Albertans in a negative way (and many Albertans have a similarly dim view of them too), simply because: a) lots of Albertans are conservative rather than liberal, and b) we have the goddamned nerve to exploit the resources in our province and get filthy rich off of them at the same time.
